Open Source Software is software where the source code is made public. This allows anyone with the knowledge to view and change the source code, before compiling it on their computer
Unix, which is what Linux is based on, was first developed in the 1960s, but it wouldn’t be until the nineties for the source code of Linux to be released.
Windows 1.0 was released in 1985 and they already had DOS at that point.

linux is open source cause thats basically what it is. its openly available source which u can download and modify easily. as for the rest of what you want to know u can find it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix
