Why Do People Pirate Software When There Is Plenty Of Equally Capable Open Source Software Available?

Open source software is good and there r some programs way better than commercial software but there r many programs that are not as well. An example is how photoshop is more polished and easier to use than GIMP.
Also take an example of openoffice Calc, when u type in a formula it will never tell the remaining formula in case u forget whereas Microsoft Office will. Its this little stuff which makes software more enjoyable to use and thats why people pirate it in my opinion. My self I don’t really like software piracy.

I think it is mostly because people just don’t know that the open source software is available. Whereas most computers come with the Microsoft operating system pre-installed people just start using that. The next thing you know you are trying to do something but the computer lacks the necessary software. If you then go to Microsoft or do a search %99 of the recommendations will be for software which you have to pay for. This nickel and dime routine gets wearisome real fast so people look for ways to get the software they want without having to constantly shell out cash. Microsoft has to shoulder a lot of the blame because they leave out a lot of applications which people want to have. The lack of adequate software is what first drove me to look for an alternative to Microsoft. They didn’t even include a CD burning app in XP Home! It was one thing after another whenever I tried to do something on my computer.
I think the developers of good software should be compensated for their work so I donate to those whose applications I find particularly useful.

Because a lot of the software isn’t truly equally capable, as polished, or easy to use.
Also, it’s a lot easier for some people to go The Pirate Bay and type in “photoshop” than it is to go to Google (or Yahoo! ;) and type in “free replacement for…” then go out and evaluate the alternatives.
Also, most people don’t even seem to know open source exists.

It’s because people want what they can get for the cheapest price.” While I understand this view and agree with the observation of human nature, I think the deeper issue is that software companies still cause a lot of piracy, because they haven’t figured out what customers need. I know many people who bought a computer, then one day, inexplicably, their computer crashes. What do they do? They find the nearest guru, and ask for help. He gives them a copy of the operating system (that they didn’t get when they bought the computer) to fix their computer. It may not be right, but is it fair to NOT give customers a copy of THEIR operating system THEY bought pre-installed? This is near-sighted and stingy of software companies. Most people in this situation would be fine if they could just get their computer back, yet no provision is made for them when the system crashes. I know this isn’t all of the piracy going on, but this is the portion that I have witnessed. In this way, software companies are pirating their own software.

I think it’s b/c hackers make the pirated software so easily available and most people have no knowledge or understanding of open source. They hear about Office, but very few have heard of OpenOffice. Also, most people seem to fear anything other than windows…they see it as way over their heads.

Some do not know and do not care. Some do it because work will not provide a copy. Just because they can.
