While developing a new mobile device(cell, mp3, tablet) will making the software open source hurt the brand?
When major companies develop these devices I wonder if they do not release the source code so that they can protect their brand. I was looking at SCION and how they encourage their customers to encourage their customers to customize their vehicles. In my opinion SCION doesn’t have the highest brand value. What do you think?

Hasn’t done the Androids any harm – http://source.android.com/index.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone#Operating_system_market_shares for the numbers. Android had the largest share at the end of 2010.
Amongst people who like to customize their cars Scions do have a lot of value, but almost any car can be customized and for a variety of purposes – but most people choose not to. Customizing a car can turn into a very expensive hobby. My own Mazda Navajo is heavily customized because I go off-roading. It’s got an 8″ lift, 34″ tires and the long snorkle means I’ll probably drown before the engine starts sucking in water. I end up buying around 7 new tires a year, at $140 each it’s not cheap.
