What open source software would I use to produce an .avi from a series of still photos, say .bmp for example?

Would like command line version, preferably for Linux, so that I can write shell scripts to specify which images to string together.

Haven’t a clue for open source. I use Paint Shop Pro for that.

I have such a program somewhere but it isn’t open source, nor command line, nor linux….
