What Open-Source Application Software Is Available for Apple Mac Hardware?

I’ve replaced Apple’s Safari’s web-browser with FireFox and I like it better. I also have replaced Apple’s Mac OS X Mail with Thunderbird and it’s a learning curve, but, so far, it seems more reliable.

Are there any other Apps for Mac OS X Leopard that are good open-source programs?

(I prefer apps written in Java).

I would appreciate all ideas.

This should at least get you started:

http://www.opensourcemac.org/

Bear in mind that the Mac, even in its heyday, never occupied more than 13% of the desktops in American homes and business. It owns even less of a market share today.

It’s true that within certain industries (like, for example, music, or movies, or graphic/publishing post production) it owns the lion’s share of the market. But across all industries (and homes), the Mac, today, has less than a 10% market share.

As such, it attracts fewer open source programmers. Only if the open-source software happens to be easily portable over to the Mac (after it has been written for Windows PCs) will at least SOME Windows software ever even have a Mac version. Of course, that said, some open source software started out for the Mac, and was ported over to Windows. It all just depends on the software one is talking about.

Adobe Acrobat, for example, started out strictly for the Mac, then got ported over to Windows…

…and boy, does it ever show. But that’s a rant for another day.

Anway… hope that helps! Good luck.
