I don’t think anything could amount to .NET development. For Windows applications OR web applications. I love the .NET languages (well, C# and ASP .NET (using C#)).

I’m currently writing a 3D engine using Managed DirectX 9 and C#. It’s coming along very nicely. And it’s very simple to setup an application, because the framework is already laid out for you.

And why is it that you need an alternative for .NET? Is it because you’d like to develop applications, with the same power as .NET, for platforms other than Windows? If so, don’t think that way. =)

There’s something out called “MonoProject”. I believe the website is http://www.monoproject.com/ and it’s a cross-platform “wrapper” for .NET, which allows you to write C# or C++ .NET (don’t know about VB .NET — and doesn’t include ASP .NET) code for OS’es like Linux. =)

Sun’s J Studio is the perfect replacement of Visual Studio.NET and the Java Server Faces Technology stands firm against the .NET technology!
