For graphic design I’ve only used commercial software like Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop in the past, and my current company has an open source only policy. Graphic design isnt what Im employed for, its something Id like to take on voluntarily (and Im not highly skilled at it but know enough to create fancy web buttons and text, manipulate photos etc), and my employer doesnt have enough experience in the area to point me in the right direction. I don’t have a lot of spare time to download and trial every program a search leads me to so I’m hoping there’s someone out there who can help!
Id prefer something as similar to Paint Shop Pro as possible.

1) Open source doesn’t always mean free, but usually that’s true
2) You’re pretty much on your own installing it. There’s usually not any support once you’ve installed or uploaded it in the case of web-based programs/software–though usually around something popular and free there will always be a forum devoted to it.
3) There could be bugs that may not be addressed right away. With no financial support coming in that means any issue will be addressed when the programmer feels like getting around to it. Open source programs are often more of a hobby for someone.
