Is using only open-source software like being a “computer vegan”?
Some people think using animals is bad. And some think using closed-source is bad. What do you think?
Btw I’m not vegan and I use closed-source software all the time. I’m a huge fan of open source and steak though.
@ Oh Yeah – I know plenty of vegans who get by just fine. Yes, it is an inconvenience but if you know what you’re doing you’ll be alright, perhaps even better off. This is the way open-source works. It’s really inconvenient at times, it can be buggy, their support is spotty at best, and you can’t always find what you need, but in the end you’ve stuck with your principles and sometimes you’re better off because of it.
EDIT: Your “honest answer” was misinformed about veganism. For the record I never discounted your answer or said your opinion wasn’t valuable, I’m just pointing out another opinion. Way to get completely defensive and childish about it.

not all open source software is buggy only the packages that have not been fully tested
if it was then linux would be buggy, firefox would be buggy, vlc, gimp and all the other programs for linux,
there are probably loads of open source programs you use which you don’t know about and are not buggy
Not necessarily. Software is a tool. Most people make do with free tools if they can, but splurge on expensive (relatively) specialized tools for jobs that are important to them. It’s not always necessarily an ethical issue, just like some people are vegetarian or vegan for health reasons as opposed to ethical reasons.
