How can I make a living as an open source software programmer?
I think open source software is really awesome and I do not have any reservations about copyrights and stuff but I am otherwise quite poor and I need to make money. I was wondering if there is a way to make money while programming open source software full time? What are the ways apart from just plain old Google Adsense?
I’m sorry, I meant open source software that is distributed completely for free — like OpenOffice or Linux.
I also mean working as a programmer/engineer independently — not having to get employed at any open source software company.

The demand for (knowledge of) open source development is growing in contractors market in UK at least, if your name will be known as a (one of the) developers of common open source tool/package you are likely to be successful in getting one of the contracts and they are usually paid fairly well.
Simple answer is get working, even if you have go work for a company at first. You need to be able to show you can do the job you want to do. If it is really important to you not to get a full time job then start asking around for freelance or go on freelance related websites. Just Get yourself a portfolio done. They all want to see what you have done previously.
