how can I boot an ex win98 pentium lll that has no current os, and make it opensource os like pc-bsd?

First I would like to say that the os was originally win98, now the hard drive is os free, wiped clean. I would like to use opensource os. I have tried downloading Knoppix, pc-bsd, and free dos all .iso files onto my laptop and burning a cd(s), but the ex win98 computer wont boot>? I get messages such as operating system not found, and/or cdrom not High sierra or iso9660. I would like to not use the floppy, but if I must I do not want win98, or to have to pay for another os.
