Good Opensource Alternative To Visual Basic?

Our team is thinking of building a comprehensive database comparison tool. VB will be perfect for the job. But, we do not want to spend on Visual basic Licenses. Can anyone suggest a good open source alternative?

Java6, Apache, Linux. And, with the Linux if you MUST do things the Bill Gates way, you could use .net with MONO (but you will have your work cut out for you).

If you work for a business, have them spend the money.
They will save money in the long run, because it is VB is quick and run extremely fast.
You and your company will not be sorry.
