Can Open Source Software Be Produced By A Software House?

Hi,
1. Is linux packaged, marketed and supported by SUN or IBM open sourced or proprietary?
2. Under what circumstances will Win 2008 server be called an “open source”?
3. Name some of the prominent proprietary software available today.
4. Are mainframes always proprietary?
Hope you can help me understand these issues…

To put you in the picture about Linux
It is free to download and use as you wish that includes putting it on any computer, You can build, and set up your own network servers, Do whatever you want.
With Linux you can’t buy it, but you can get payable full support from many large companies such as Novel, Sun Micros IBM, Hollywood Studios depending on what you want at a low rate of pay.
Windows will NEVER be open source software, Microsoft have tried for years to stop open source Linux with many dirty tricks. Now Linux is on the move
Sun Micros have now made their Unix Operating System open source things can only get better for PC users in the future .. Never having to pay for software again.
