From the Uber Strict dept.:
Red Hat had something to say to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) about granting software patents. In all fairness, the USPTO asked for public input on how it should use the Supreme Court’s Bilski decision to guide it when granting new patents. Red Hat has a long history of answering the call for public comment on this cause.
Red Hat’s legal team essentially said the patent office now has the excuse to become uber strict when issuing new software patents. Although the July decision didn’t abolish software patents (as some hoped it would), it could still be used to Just Say No to most of them. That’s what Rob Tiller figures. He’s Red Hat’s vice president and assistant general counsel, IP.

I ran across was a receipt dated December, 2009 for the purchase of my current desktop computer. I bought a low-end, small footprint desktop: an eMachines EL-1300G. The cost at a local big box retailer was $159. A friend of mine was so impressed she went to the store right before Christmas to buy one as a gift for her sister. The price had dropped to $149. Of course, the systems came preloaded with Windows. Linux was not an option.

From the Refresh dept.:
BROffice, Google, Novell and Red Hat are among the sponsors of LibreOffice, a community led fork of OpenOffice that is to be developed under the umbrella of a European based non-profit to be named The Document Foundation.
While development of the new fork will focus around the developers inherited from Novell, Red Hat and Debian, the project has the support of the great majority of the community surrounding OpenOffice.org; Among those who have expressed support for LibreOffice and the Document Foundation are the Free Software Foundation, the OSI, OASIS, Canonical, credativ and Collabora and the GNOME Foundation.

There are no profound revelations here…at least not in this post. It just serves to reinforce something we already know.Chase, Ami and Zeneda are three fairly recent recipients of HeliOS Project computers, ages 12, 13 and 11 respectively. When we go into a home to give a child a computer, one of the first things we do is explain to them that we have installed Linux on their computer, not Windows. This announcement is usually met with even stares or shrugs. They don’t care…they are just jacked that they are finally entering into the tech age at home. Most times, any concern expressed is with the parent. Of course it would be.

MeeGo developers eager to test the operating system on a mobile device have brought the Linux-based mobile OS to the Nexus One, HTC Desire, and Dell Streak. Maybe Nokia should hurry up and announce an official MeeGo smartphone.

First I would like to say that the os was originally win98, now the hard drive is os free, wiped clean. I would like to use opensource os. I have tried downloading Knoppix, pc-bsd, and free dos all .iso files onto my laptop and burning a cd(s), but the ex win98 computer wont boot>? I get messages such as operating system not found, and/or cdrom not High sierra or iso9660. I would like to not use the floppy, but if I must I do not want win98, or to have to pay for another os.

Recently I had a reader request a bit of a “how to” on the GNOME desktop. After giving it some thought, and at first wondering why anyone would need a walk around for the GNOME desktop, I realized that some users simply don’t have the ability to look at the computer desktop from the same vantage point as those of us who “get it”. With that thought …

I’m aware that probably no freeware opensource program is exactly up to par with lightroom, but just as GIMP is a really good alternative to photoshop, I was wondering if you know about something similar to lightroom.
