Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Released

From the NUbuntus dept.:
Canonical today announced the upcoming release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server (and Desktop -Ed.) Edition which includes extended security and maintenance updates free of charge to all users for five years (versus 18 months for a standard release). The third and latest LTS version of the popular Linux server distribution, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, delivers on the standing commitment to release a long term support version of Ubuntu every two years and builds on the success of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, which has been a hugely popular deployment platform with Ubuntu enterprise users. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS will be available for free download on Thursday 29 April.

In addition to the stability of long-term support, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS extends the cloud-computing capability of Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, powered by Eucalyptus – a technology that is becoming widely used as a basis for building private and hybrid clouds. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS also includes many major applications and packagesadded or updated since the previous LTS release, giving new and upgrading users an extended range of applications that can be easily installed at launch.

Understanding Oracle’s ODF Plug-in Pricing: What it Means for OpenOffice.org

Andy Updegrove may have cracked the code on Oracle’s seemingly insane decision to start charging $90 for the formerly free ODF plugin for Microsoft Office. That’s $90 in a minimum pack of 100, plus a 22% support fees for updates. Does Oracle really think that this will fly with companies, is Oracle trying to kill off the product entirely? The ODF plugin was developed to allow Microsoft Office users to exchange documents with OpenOffice.org users. It works for spreadsheets, presentations, and word processing docs and Sun gave it away for years. So why has Oracle so suddenly decided to charge for it? Whatever Oracle’s strategy, the company isn’t talking.

Opensource / Freeware MS Excel-like / Database program?

I don’t really want to spend a bunch of money on the MS Office suite and the free trial I have is about to run out, so I’m looking for a similar program that i can get for free. The only one I really know of is the Google version, which is nice, but doesn’t have all of the features I am looking for. I am looking for a program that enables you to have Tabs and Worksheets, which I don’t think the Google program has.

Thanks in advance!

Google Source Code Stolen

From the Gaia dept.:
Ever since Google disclosed in January that Internet intruders had stolen information from its computers, the exact nature and extent of the theft has been a closely guarded company secret. But a person with direct knowledge of the investigation now says that the losses included one of Googleâ??s crown jewels, a password system that controls access by millions of users worldwide to almost all of the companyâ??s Web services, including e-mail and business applications.
Related

The program, code named Gaia for the Greek goddess of the earth, was attacked in a lightning raid taking less than two days last December, the person said. Described publicly only once at a technical conference four years ago, the software is intended to enable users and employees to sign in with their password just once to operate a range of services.

OpenSource (Similar to Prophecy or pcmole or something)?

I’m looking to see if there are any open source api’s out there where i can get Dll’s with good ducumentation on some sort of api that can support semi truck routing.

SImilar api’s are ones like PCMOLE or PROPHESY. I’m doing research to see if i should stick with PCMOLE or go with Prophesy.

Mainly we need it for truck routing based on truck height and other factors and i figured id take open source into consideration.
